Daily Office Lectionary

WITH PSALMS according to the usage of THE ORDER OF SAINT LUKE

On Monday through Saturday morning, the two readings listed in the Revised Common Daily Lectionary are used as follows:
• If a reading seems more appropriate to the morning or the evening, it is used there.
• Readings for morning and evening prayer include both Old and New Testament readings in the course of a week.
• Sequential readings may be assigned to one of the hours for a series of days (for example, the readings from Hebrews 11 on the ninth to twelfth days of Christmas have all been assigned to morning prayer).
• Readings are sometimes revised, expanded, or shortened as seems appropriate for the Lukan community. Readings replaced or greatly revised are marked * .
All three lections for each Lord’s Day are used in the following way:
• One of the assigned readings will be listed for Sunday Morning Prayer.
• One of the other assigned readings will be listed for Sunday Evening Prayer.
• The third reading will be listed for the Saturday Evening Resurrection Vigil.
Each reading is followed by a brief “incipit” to provide some clue as to its content.

In the lived experience of the church through the ages, some psalms have been associated with certain seasons, feasts or holy days, and this lectionary honors that use-age. We have chosen not to follow the practice of some orders to pray through the entire psalter sequentially, nor that of lectionaries that use only the “Sunday Psalm” for an entire week. The recommended psalms in this lectionary build upon the daily office psalm lectionary found in A Lukan Psalter and the earlier work on the daily lectionary done by the Order of Saint Luke.

The length and breadth and depth of the psalms is awesome. At some offices, the recommended psalm will support the scripture lesson. At others, it may stand as a counterpoint to remind us of a different aspect to consider. Some psalms are included to provide for our using as many of the psalms as possible, without including those which seemed to us not to speak to or for us in a helpful way. The psalm for the Saturday evening Resurrection Vigil is intended to be the psalm for the next day (Sunday). If what we list differs from what you will use then, please adapt the vigil psalter.

The psalm references are based on those found in A Lukan Psalter.

In the year beginning with Advent of 2022, we will be field testing this lectionary. Corrections and suggested revisions should be forwarded to:
