You are invited to attend the Convocation of the Order of Saint Luke in Pittsburgh at the retreat
house of Saint Paul of the Cross, 148 Monastery Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15203. The Convocation
begins Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 2:00 pm and concludes Friday, Oct 21 following lunch.
We are honored to have Sr. Joyce Ann Zimmerman, CPPS, (Sisters of the Precious Blood) as our
leader this year as she shares her experience of living life under a Rule. Sr. Joyce is the President
of the North American Academy of Liturgy, where she has delighted her audiences with both her
humor and her insight. Sr. Joyce is also the Director of the Institute for Liturgical Ministry,
Dayton, Ohio. She is the author of numerous books, including Worship with Gladness:
Understanding Worship from the Heart (Calvin Institute of Christian Worship (CICW)) and
Silence: Everyday Living and Praying.
One of the highlights of the Convocation is the celebration of worship in the tradition of the
catholic and evangelical life of the church–both the daily office and daily Word and Table. Since
our gathering begins on the Feast of Saint Luke, we will celebrate his feast on Tuesday evening.
Wednesday evening we will be investing our new officers. Thursday afternoon we will have the
Profession of Vows. During this service we will celebrate those who are making their first
profession of vows, those who are taking life vows, and all who reaffirming their annual vows.
All of this takes place in the relaxed and beautiful setting in the cloister of St. Paul of the Cross
Monastery in Pittsburgh. In addition to the structured time of learning and worship, you will
have time for reflection, conviviality with other retreatants, shared meals, and formation in
prayer and the Rule of Life and Service.
At the close of each day, there are wine and snacks in the refectory, or the possibility of an
evening “pilgrimage” for those desiring a later evening of theology on tap.
For any who have not yet experienced an OSL retreat, you are greatly encouraged to attend.
These days together will introduce you to the Order and our life together in diaspora in a
powerful and enjoyable way. You are also encouraged to invite a friend to attend. It is a great
way for new people to find out who we are.
(A quick note for those of you who wonder why this is called a Convocation, when our yearly
gathering is called a Retreat. Our constitution calls for the investiture of Officers to be held at a
General Convocation, to be held every four years.)
