2017 Retreat Scottsdale

Forty members of the Order enjoyed the beauty of the Arizona desert and the comfort of the Franciscan Renewal Center during our 2017 Annual Retreat. Our speaker, “Tweedy Sombrero” Navarete, guided us through various life stages, telling personal stories from within her rich Dine’ (Navajo) traditions. She encouraged us to seek our spiritual center, find our own stories, and live into our own traditions without appropriating the traditions of other cultures.
Worship at the retreat was rich and varied under the capable direction of Sr. Alice Kay Lovelace and the leadership of our sisters and brothers. It was refreshing to experience Morning Prayer in an outdoor chapel as we soaked up the desert atmosphere. In addition, we were pleased to observe the Feast of Saint Luke on our patron’s feast day, October 18.

2017 Retreat

You are invited to participate in the Order of Saint Luke’s 2017 Retreat. Our annual Retreat will be held October 16-19, 2017 at the Franciscan Renewal Center in Scottsdale, Arizona (5802 E. Lincoln Dr., Scottsdale, AZ). We are excited to announce a new topic for this retreat – Native American / Desert Spirituality – taking advantage of the natural beauty of the Renewal Center, “a meeting place so serene that even the trees whisper.”

The retreat begins at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 16 and ends at Noon (with lunch) on October 19.

Evelene “Tweedy” Sombrero Navarette will be our guest presenter.  Tweedy is a full-blooded Dine’ (Navajo) from Inscription House, Arizona.   She attended Iliff School of Theology in Denver, was ordained Deacon in 1988 in the New Mexico Conference, and ordained Elder in 1992 in the Desert Southwest Annual Conference.  For many years she has been involved in Native American Ministries at various levels.  Tweedy is currently serving at the Sr. Pastor of Trinity UMC in YumaArizona.
